During the COVID-19 period, Bus Radio worked with Basic Needs and CBM on radio conversations about mental health, disability inclusion and access to social protection. The station’s 2021 Basic Needs Show Report records six programmes, broadcast between 17 December 2020 and 21 January 2021.
Listeners brought questions about disability registration and the Inua Jamii cash transfer programme. A representative from the National Council for Persons with Disabilities visited the studio twice to respond to those questions. The report records follow-up visits, registrations and access to support among listeners whose concerns were raised.
The series also included interviews with local health professionals, calls, SMS feedback and community fieldwork. It created a route for people to ask questions in a familiar setting and connect with the organisations able to respond.
The experience shows the contribution community radio can make to a social impact partnership: make information understandable, invite questions, connect people with services and bring their feedback into the discussion.
